Red Dragon Martial Arts

The Red Dragon School of Martial Arts is a traditional Hung Gar Kung Fu and Tai Chi school located in McKinley Mall. In addition to Hung Gar, they offer the Yang style of Tai Chi as well as a wide variety of gifts, weapons, clothing and equipment. With over 30 years of training and teaching experience, they offer a well-rounded and exciting approach to ancient martial arts.

After the departure of James G. Fox, PhD, from the area, the Red Dragon School of Martial Arts became the only official regional certified Yang ChengFu Tai Chi Chuan Center under the Yang Family in China. With the support of 6th generation Yang family member Master Yang Jun, Bob Gott was named as Center Director.

Their website can be found here.

Classical Tai Chi of Buffalo

Studying Tai Chi since 1976, Sifu Jim Roach is a certified teacher of Classical Tai Chi, a student of Master Stephen Hwa, Ph.D. and his first student to receive teacher certification.  Both Master Hwa and Jim Roach studied with the Wu Family, and Master Hwa was a student of Grandmaster Young Wabu who was a personal student of Grandmaster Wu Chien Chuan, with Jim Roach being a disciple of Wu Kwong Yu (Eddie) in Toronto.

Bill Adams Martial Arts

Taught in part by international champion Bow Sim Mark, Bill Adams and his teachers use Tai Chi as an added feature to this established school.  With two fitness centers, Bill Adams is known for his scholarly study of martial arts, particularly Japanese style, and for quality children's classes.

Kung Fu USA

Known more for "8 Step Preying Mantis" kung fu, they teach "Shuyun Style" Tai Chi, renamed after the grandmaster in California to differentiate it from the Wu Family style it came from.  They are located on Elmwood Avenue in the City of Buffalo.

The national web site for Kung Fu USA can be found here.

Taoist Tai Chi Society of WNY

Founded locally by Eva Wong, translator of Cultivating Stillness, Taoist Tai Chi was a recreated style developed from the experiences of Grandmaster Moi before fleeing China during the Cultural Revolution.  It stresses postures and movements as a means of physical therapy, and breath work, strangely, is not taught until students have been learning for about two years.

The International Taoist Tai Chi Society website can be found here.

8 Tigers Academy of Tai Chi & Chi Kung

Led by Scott Hiemenz, the 8 Tigers Academy brings Tai Chi, Chi Kung to the Northtowns of Erie County.  Focus is on energy work with a Reiki influence.  Ken Stuczynski sometimes teaches under the academy's authority in the Southtowns, with a stress on traditional movements and body alignment, never forgetting martial applications.

Their website can be found here.

There are others who teach Tai Chi and related arts in the area, and we would like to know more about them before posting information here.  If you are such a school or instructor, please contact us.
